Sylvia P. Simpson, (Sally) formerly of Oyster Bay and Glen Cove, New York, died peacefully, aged 94, at her home in Boulder, Colorado, on September 24th. She was the beloved wife of the late William C. Simpson, and is survived by her three sons, Webster Young, Scott Young, and James Simpson, and six grandchildren, River, Pearl, and Grace Young; and Abigail, Georgia, and Natalie Simpson.
She is predeceased by three sisters, Mary Ellen Frantz, Patricia Sindahl, and Nancy Searles. Sylvia was born in New York City and grew up in Scarsdale, New York, the youngest of the four daughters of Frederick Alexander Purdy and Seena Ruth Harbach Purdy.
The Purdy family was associated with Rye, New York for several generations, and had a role in the original establishment of Westchester and Nassau Counties. Frederick Purdy was the inventor of the first railroad ticket vendor machines and eventually the owner or 342 Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Seena Harbach Purdy was the niece of the Broadway lyricist Otto Harbach, who wrote "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes".
Sylvia was an avid skier, reader, and later a devoted golf and bridge player.
She graduated Scarsdale High School, married, and eventually worked in New York commercial real estate at the Fifth Madison Corporation. She was a member of the Women's Bible Society of New York, the North Country Garden Club of Long Island, the American Red Cross Long Island Chapter.
In Boulder, Colorado, Episcopal prayers led by Deacon Lisa Campbell, and a time of visitation, will take place at Crist Mortuary and Gardens on Tuesday, October 1, at 2 pm.
In Long Island, New York, a burial service and reception following will take place at Locust Valley Cemetery, Lattingtown, Long Island, on October 7th.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests planting a memorial tree through the Sympathy Store.
A funeral service for Sally will be held Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder, CO 80301.
