Bob Eyres, 70, a resident of Boulder, Colorado, passed away early Friday morning, December 7th 2018 after a short battle with cancer. He died peacefully in his home with his beloved wife and daughter by his side.
Bob was an unbelievably kind and generous spirit who brought such light into this world. His twinkling eyes and smile made everyone around him feel loved. Bobby’s huge heart and youthful spirit will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
Bob was born in Elmira, NY on May 8, 1948 to Robert and Virginia (Brisco) Eyres. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy High School in 1966. Bob was recognized as one of the best natural athletes in the area. He excelled and lettered in football, baseball, and golf and went on to play baseball for Florida Institute of Technology. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1978 with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Fine Arts.
Bob served his country with honor and distinction as a Specialist 4th Class during the Vietnam War, being awarded The Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action. The seriousness of his wounds resulted in his being hospitalized for a year at Valley Forge Hospital. He epitomized the best that our country had to offer during those troubling times.
Bob was a phenomenal tennis player and taught tennis in Arizona, Wyoming, and later at the Harvest House in Boulder. He also worked with the City of Boulder’s Recreational department in the Children’s Tennis program. His second career was as a postal service worker with the Boulder Post Office for almost 20 years.
On December 4th, 1986 Bob was united in marriage to Peggy Walter in Boulder, CO. They lived happily in love for 32 years, and shared a similar view of enjoying life to the fullest and making every day special.
One of Bob’s great loves was his cabin at the top of Flagstaff Road above Boulder. The cabin was once the home of Stephen Stills (Crosby, Stills & Nash). Bob loved his entire wildlife family and was a wonderful caretaker and friend to the visiting moose, bears, turkeys, deer, elk, chipmunks, mountain lions, wildcats, and hummingbirds that visited often.
Another passion for Bob was his gigantic flower garden, which was a labor of love and a source of tremendous joy. Each May, Bob - along with Peggy – would work tirelessly for weeks to plant hundreds of flowers. It was a sight to behold and many family and friends have pictures of Bob’s infamous garden!
Bob was a life long Yankee fan and became a CU Buffs fan after moving to Boulder. He also enjoyed his daily crossword puzzle, playing golf and tennis, card games and cribbage, studying and collecting art, people watching, and traveling around the globe.
Bob and Peggy spent winters at their home in Cocoa Beach, Florida where he enjoyed walks on the beach, discovering new restaurants, and many visits with his family and friends.
Bob is survived by his wife Peggy Eyres and his daughter Neelama Julie Eyres, as well as two inherited daughters, Heather (Clint) Chandler and Laurie (Neal) Sittig; his sister Nannette Piscitelli and her children Suzette and Douglas Haskins; his grandchildren, Willie Keller, Maggie Keller, Cole Sittig, Jack Sittig, and Kai Schiesser, as well as many other relatives and friends who love Bob/Bobby dearly.
A memorial service for Bob will be held on Thursday December 13th at 1pm at Crist Mortuary: 3395 Penrose Pl, Boulder, CO 80301. A reception will follow from 3-6pm at the Hotel Boulderado: 2115 13th St, Boulder, CO 80302.
A celebration of life will be held after the holidays in early 2019. For more details, and/or to email condolences: [email protected]
In lieu of gifts and flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Bob’s name to the American Cancer Society.
Bob’s family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the entire staff at Compassus Hospice; as well as the countless family and friends who we considered “Bob’s army of angels”.
Bob had an incredible heart and a profound compassion for mankind. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and loyal friend. His kindness and fun-loving spirit will be forever missed!
