He was born in Minneapolis, MN on May 23, 1931, to Samuel and Vera Eddy. He was married to Karen Peterson (deceased) from 1954 – 1983. He married wife Barbara MacRae in 1984 and she was by his side when he passed.
Richard graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1956 followed by an internship at Sacramento County Hospital in California. Shortly after his internship, he joined the US Army Medical Corps where he served as Port Surgeon in Port Whittier, Alaska until 1959. After completing his active duty, he transitioned to private practice in Alexandria Minnesota while also serving in the Minnesota National Guard. He maintained his fondness for his military service long after his resignation in 1963.
Eager to expand his career, he moved his family to Boulder Colorado in 1966 where he opened a small solo practice on North Broadway. In 1969 he became the founder and managing partner of Table Mesa Family Medicine Group where he practiced until his retirement in 1993. The practice thrived under his steadfast leadership, and he built an enduring legacy with both his patients and the community at large. He found time to indulge his passion for music by singing with the Boulder Chorale, supporting the CU Music Department, and encouraging his kid’s high-volume participation in school music programs.
Upon his retirement, Rich found new purpose by volunteering with different organizations including the Radio Reading Service of the Rockies where he particularly enjoyed reading stories for the visually impaired. He and Barbara also devoted time to their love of traveling and shared countless stories of the people they met and the places that their wanderlust took them. Cruising became their travel mode of choice and the map on their foyer wall was covered with pins from literally every continent on the planet. His passion for exploring was well expressed as a land-locked Boulderite whose favorite days on the water were in stormy seas.
He is survived by wife Barbara, children Sam Eddy (Kristy), Jim Eddy (Monica), Janess Eddy, and Susan MacRae Cracraft (Jim). Also, grandchildren Brien Eddy, Lindsee Eddy, Kevyn Eddy, Emma Eddy, Allyson Eddy, Brittany Johnson, Brianna Clements, and Alex Cracraft.
Rich’s life was a life well lived and his stoic and calm nature and love for his family will be missed.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made in his name to Boulder Community Health Foundation’s Patients fund https://www.bch.org/foundation/donate-now/our-patients/ or the Colorado Audio Information Network https://aincolorado.org/donate/.
