Paul Groth passed away peacefully on September 4 surrounded by his family. Paul had been battling Parkinson’s disease for the past nine years.
Paul was born in Winterset, Iowa, and lived on the family farm until he left home for college. He graduated with a B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa, continuing on to receive his MS in Hospital Administration from the University of Iowa. Paul later received an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado. Paul had a long and wonderful career that included pharmaceutical research and also pharmaceutical education administration. A pharmacist by training, Paul returned to that first love when retiring from his administration positions and moving to Boulder with his wife, Linda, in 2003. Paul was the pharmacy manager at Safeway in Boulder for about five years and was “a legend” there according to some of the pharmacy staff due to his deep commitment to customer service and personal rapport with the pharmacy clientele.
Although Paul never returned to live in Iowa after finishing school, he was an Iowan, through and through, and never tired of swapping stories with anyone from Iowa he came across. He had a great love of the outdoors, particularly fishing and working in his yard or on outdoor projects. A lover of grassroots politics as a precinct leader. Paul was also active in Parkinson’s disease research and support groups, having been diagnosed in 2004 with the disease. Paul also thoroughly enjoyed travelling, going to concerts with his wife, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His energy and friendly nature, particularly while battling Parkinson’s, was an inspiration to all around him.
Paul is survived by his wife, Linda (Hugen) Groth, his children Kristin Groth of Louisville, CO (Jeff Moline), Tom Groth of Denver, CO (Danielle Groth), and Emily Groth of Portland, OR (David D’Ascenzo, and seven grandchildren, Rachel and Maggie Moline, Jake, Ashley, and Madison Groth, and Kara and Dominic D’Ascenzo. Paul is also survived by his sister, Linda Beaman-Sublett, of Dove Creek, CO, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther (McDonald) Groth and Everett Groth.
Paul will be deeply missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, his family encourages donations to the Parkinson Association of the Rockies, 1325 S. Colorado Blvd, #204B, Denver, CO, 80222, www.parkinsonrockies.org. The family invites to share and view photos and memories of Paul at the online internet memorial at www.cristmortuary.com.
