Josephine Mary Engle, “Josie”, of Boulder, CO passed away on Saturday May 13, 2023 at the age of 88. She was born on February 12, 1935, in Erie, PA where she grew up the eldest of seven children with a strong work ethic and helpful nature. She sang many Polish songs with her siblings while attending Holy Trinity grade school and graduating from Villa Maria High School. The daughter of Charles and Mary Stahon, growing up during the Great Depression, her ethnic values ran deep.
Known as “Josie” to most, she found great fulfillment establishing her own catering service. She enjoyed many activities, including country line dancing, ice skating, roller blading and breakfast on Presque Isle beaches in Erie with her family. Josie had a tender heart for the stray dogs she brought home. She also enjoyed gardening, home canning, and spending time at her cabin in NY State. Her love of travel was boundless, particularly to national parks, we remember well the TripTix she navigated by! She had a passion for anything southwest, especially Colorado! With great enthusiasm, she passed on her sense of adventure to all her children and grandchildren. Her avid love for alpine skiing in Colorado was transferred to her children, who continue this day with their love of skiing. She would be thrilled to know that little Hannah was mountain top on her skis this season at two years old!
She is survived by her siblings Charles Stahon, Erie PA, Raymond Stahon , West Palm Beach FL, Jane Brown Denver CO, Francis Runstedler, Greensborough NC, Margret Bakke Beaverton OR, Alice Orlando Avon IN. Josie’s children Kathleen Borowy, Littleton CO, Michael Engle, Rochester NY, Richard Engle, Longmont CO, David Engle, Eagle CO. Daughters-In-Law include Gloria Engle, Tammy Engle and Lauren Engle. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Jennifer Lashua, Heather Coon, Michael Borowy, Charles Borowy, Kara Bertson, Christie Engle, Karys Engle and Hannah Engle. Great grandchildren who were not able to enjoy her unique personality include Abigail, Samantha and Matthew Coon, Leighton and Rhys Lashua, Cooper and Ashlyn Borowy. Many nieces and nephews fondly remember her entertaining sleepovers and pool parties.
A resident of Boulder Canyon for the past seven years, Josie was well known to the staff and other residents for her “feisty” attitude and engaging conversation. The family is most grateful for your endless care and love you showed to Josie through the years. We cannot thank you enough for being her daily companions.
Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Thursday May 18th at 1pm at Crist Mortuary and Mountain View Park 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder 80301. A memorial Mass at Holy Trinity and service at Calvary Cemetery will be held in Erie, PA later this summer.
