John D. Ferree of Boulder died Thursday September 9, 2010. He was 78. He was born September 24, 1931 to Donald and Wilma (Myers) Ferree in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended High school in Dubuque, Iowa. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in Japan during the Korean conflict. After being honorably discharged on February 23, 1955 he then attended the University of Iowa, where he received his B.A. and M.A. in education. John moved to Boulder in 1966 where he opened Mesa Elementary School and four years later he opened Bear Creek Elementary, and remained as principal for 20 years. He retired in 1990.
In 1992 he married MaryAnne Knauer in Boulder, CO. John enjoyed riding his bike around Boulder, taking care of his grandchildren, reading and auditing classes at CU. He was active in Bible study and church choir at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife MaryAnne, two daughters, Martha Batch and husband Steve of Arvada, Molly Nunnery of Broomfield; four grandchildren Caitlin and Mallory Batch, Zachary and Braden Nunnery. A celebration of life service will be held 10 am Saturday September 25, 2010 at Bear Elementary School, 2500 Table Mesa Dr. Memorial contributions may be made to Bear Creek Elementary School Library or bring a children’s book for donation.
