Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1926 and attending elementary and high schools there, she received a bachelor of arts degree majoring in sociology from the University of Cincinnati in 1948 and a master’s degree in social work from the Columbia School of Social Work in 1955. She married John P. Snyder in 1952 in Cincinnati, and the couple moved to Bloomfield, NJ in 1953 and to Madison, NJ in 1960. She was employed as a school social worker for 13 years in Summit, NJ and Mount Olive Township, Morris County, NJ.
After moving to Reston, VA in 1980, she coordinated a Fairfax County Head Start eye-screening project for the National Society to Prevent Blindness. From 1985 until her retirement in 1991, she was employed by Reston Interfaith, Inc., first as the agency’s first social worker, and then as case management supervisor of the Embry Rucker Community Shelter for homeless families and singles. She continued with the agency in a parttime role administering a revolving-loan fund for shelter residents moving into housing until she and her husband moved to Friends House Retirement Community in Sandy Spring, MD in 1992.
She was an active member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) beginning in 1958, through Monthly Meetings in Montclair and Summit NJ, Reston, VA, and Sandy Spring, MD. She later attended and joined the Boulder Friends Meeting.
She was at various times a member of the boards of Planned Parenthood of Morris County, NJ, the Northwest Center for Community Health (Reston), Reston Interfaith, and Friends House. She also served as volunteer coordinator of the Community Clinic, (Rockville, MD). She volunteered with Family Hospice after her move to Flatirons Terrace Independent Living Boulder, CO in 2008. Among other things, she enjoyed weekly mah jongg games and the various music offerings at CU. “There is no need to travel”, Jeanne is quoted as saying, “In Boulder I’m on vacation all the time”.
She was pre-deceased by Lawrence Strong, with whom she had a Celebration of Commitment at the Sandy Springs Friends Meeting in June, 2000. Her husband John died in 1997, and a daughter, Barbara Ruth Snyder, died in 1983 at the age of 26. She is survived by her daughter Lyn Mead of Boulder, CO.
