Jack was deeply loved for his devotion to family and friends, as well as his deep appreciation for all of God’s creatures. His loyalty, adventurous spirit, and passion for writing will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Born in New Jersey, Jack grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he attended St. Mary’s High School. Thanks to scholarships, he was able to continue his education at Boston College and The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he earned his Ph.D. in Psychology.
Jack worked as a Research Psychologist at the Army Research Institute. Later in his career, he practiced clinical psychology with the Maryland State Prison System, the U.S. Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home, and in his private practice at the Family Life Center in Columbia, Maryland.
An accomplished author, Jack wrote several books and numerous travel articles for his local newspaper in Maryland. He was particularly proud of his book Voices Behind the Wall, which reflects his work with the Maryland State Prison System.
In addition to his writing, Jack had a deep love for poetry and served on the board of the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society. He was especially proud of hosting the annual Irish Evening, an event that supported the organization’s non-profit educational mission.
Jack and Nancy shared a love for outdoor activities, including skiing and sea kayaking, during their extensive international travels.
Jack is survived by his son, John Farrell of Alexandria, Virginia; his daughter, Helene Farrell Hall, and her husband Michael T Hall, of The Plains, Virginia, and Captiva Island, Florida; and his sisters, Bett McCarthy and Eileen Farrell, both of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Jack is also survived by his nieces, nephews, goddaughter, Nancy’s family, and Jane’s family. He was predeceased by his first wife, Jane Manson Farrell, his second wife, Nancy Colburn Farrell, and Jack’s sister Catherine Farrell.
Jack’s funeral, burial, and reception will be 11am on April 10th, 2025 at Sacred Heart of Mary, 6739 South Boulder Road, Boulder, CO 80303.
