

Daniel James Torpy (Dan) died Tuesday, September 24,2024, at Boulder Canyon Health and Rehabilitation Center. Dan stayed there in respite care while their home was being repaired after a water leak in the kitchen. Dan was born in Marietta, Ohio, on January 28, 1935, the second son of Charles Daniel Torpy and Charlotte (Meister) Torpy. When he was twelve, he became the youngest Ham Radio operator in Ohio. Dan graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Masters in Electrical Engineering. He worked 35 years for the Naval Surface Weapons Center in White Oak, Maryland.
He married Estelle Mae Watts on February 14, 1976, at Twinbrook Baptist Church in Rockville, Maryland. They celebrated 48 years of marriage. Dan was an active member of the Sports Car Club of America, racing Formula Fords and other cars for 16 years. He also raced in IMSA. After he retired, they sold their home in Rockville and moved to Boulder, Colorado. The family joined First Baptist Church (later Pine Street Church), and he volunteered as Financial Secretary for 22 years, ran the sound system, and helped with the Tape Ministry for Shut-ins. He helped the church office with its first computer system and helped others with their personal computers. He and Estelle assembled the Boulder High School Parent Newsletter and supported the Marching band. In addition to his parents, Dan was predeceased by his brother William Torpy and nephew William Torpy. Surviving in addition to his wife, Estelle M Torpy, son, Brendan Torpy, Boulder, Colorado, daughter Carolyn Torpy Steinkoenig and her husband Micheal, and their two children, James Richard and Isabelle Marie of Lakewood, Colorado, niece Michelle Torpy, of Marietta, Ohio and great nephew Jason Torpy. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pine Street Church, 1237 Pine Street, Boulder, Colorado on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow.
