Barbara Kay Stehlik, 74, of Boulder died Wednesday, July 20 of congestive heart failure. Kay was born February 26, 1937 in Canon City, Colorado, the daughter of W. T. “Doc” Little and Frieda Pruitt Little. She was very proud to have been a 5th generation Coloradan, Kay grew up in Canon City and graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. Thereafter, she began teaching junior high English in Brea, California. After a short time in California, Kay returned to Boulder where she met her husband to be, Richard “Dick” Stehlik. Kay and Dick were married July 27, 1963 in Colorado Springs, subsequently making their home in Boulder.
Kay was a people person and made lasting friends with most all whom she met. She was widely recognized by her many friends for her work in Democratic Party politics and her service to the community. Kay was the recipient of the 1993 Give’em Hell Harry Award from the Boulder County Democratic Party. Kay managed political campaigns, served on the boards of the SCFD and The Colorado Energy Assistance Foundation, played a large part in conducting the 1980 Census, and worked in State and County government in the areas of energy conservation, housing, and Senior Property Tax write off.
Kay had a soft spot in her heart for animals, especially birds. She was adept at identifying many species and loved feeding them.
Kay looked forward, recently, to meeting with a group of friends at a coffee shop in North Boulder on a regular basis. She enjoyed the discussion and companionship very much.
Her family was all-important in her life. Kay was very loving and was much loved. She will be greatly missed and is survived by her husband, her son John Stehlik and his partner Christine Morrison of Greeley, her daughter Wendy Meyer and Wendy’s husband Steve of Boulder, her brothers Bill Little of Denver, and Jim Little and his wife Constance of Wetmore, Colorado, and Kay’s grandsons Max and Sam Meyer, the focus of her love and affection.
