John Kannar Hurley, age 68, of Boston, passed away on Friday, August 1, 2014 in his home surrounded by his family following a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Judith (Burns) Hurley of Boston with whom he shared 43 years of marriage.
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 10, 1945, he was the son of the late James and Alice Hurley. Following the death of his mother, John moved to New Jersey with his sister, Mary, where they were raised by their Aunt and Uncle, Lillian and Gordon Wall.
Following high school, John began his higher education at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, PA earning his BA. He continued his studies at Antioch University New England in NH, receiving a M.Ed. and also earned a M.S.W. at the University of Connecticut.
John’s career spanned years of helping others. He worked within the Social Work Department of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and also had been employed as a Psychologist at the Greater Nashua Mental Health agency in Nashua, NH. He was a proud member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and the American Recorder Society. John and his wife, Judith, were active members of the Trinity Church in Boston. They enjoyed world-wide travel, art, music, and especially their families and dear friends. John was known for his humor, his zest for life, and his appreciation of every new day.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his siblings, Richard J. Hurley and his wife Betty, of MN, Joseph L. Hurley and his wife Sandra, of FL, Anne Hurley of SD, Jane Heikkila of WI, Mary Hurley Jordan and her partner Henry Quinlan, of Merrimack, NH. He was predeceased by his sister, Kathleen Wynne Hurley. He also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2014 beginning with graveside services at 10:30 am in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, followed by services at Trinity Church, 206 Clarendon St, (Copley Sq.) Boston where the family will be receiving guests at 12:30 pm prior to the 2:00 pm memorial service. A reception at the Church will follow.
