With a heavy heart, we would like to notify our friends and family of the passing of our beloved father, George Woo Jr. on March 5, 2023
George was born in 1923 in Taoshan, China, to a family who were early sojourners to America. He grew up during wartime China, and bravely volunteered to join the Chinese air force, at a time when as an only son, he could have been exempted. As a member of the Nationalist Chinese Air Force, he was assigned to the Chinese American Composite Wing (CACW), popularly known as ‘The Flying Tigers’. His unit was the 1st Bombardment Group, 4th Squadron. The CACW was also part of the US 14th Air Force.
As a navigator, he participated in many bombing campaigns in Burma as well as inside China. He narrowly escaped death/capture by the Japanese, not once but twice. As a testament to his valor, his story was chronicled in the Chinese language website the flyingtiger-cacw.com in 2021 and on the nextshark.com in 2022, and reposted on numerous other websites such as Yahoo News, Facebook/AAPI, etc. Until his death, he was one of the last surviving Flying Tigers.

After the war, he moved our family to Hong Kong and then, to the United States, accepting the challenge of immigrating to a new land. He took work that was available to him, long hours as a waiter in Chinese restaurants, and with purpose and determination, raised an extraordinary family. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Goy Fong, his son Frank, granddaughter, Jennifer, and leaves behind his children Edward, Susanna, Henry, Alice, and Margaret, 13 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
Viewing and funeral service are planned for this Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the J.S Waterman-Langone Chapel on 580 Commercial Street, Boston from 9:30 -11:30 am.
