Smith Goddard, 89, left this life to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, May 24, 2014 surrounded by his famiy at his home. He was born March 3, 1925 in Prentiss County to Clyde and Mattie Belle Goddard. In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served proudly until 1946. He was an active member of the National Guard for several years.
He married the love of his life, Virginia Pounds, on March 12, 1949. In 1955, he attended Jones Junior College and became a Master Watch and Jewelry Repairman. In 1958, he and his brother, James Goddard founded Goddard’s Jewelry in Booneville.
He was a member of Gaston Baptist Church. A member of the Masonic Lodge 305, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, member of A&A Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, member of the American Legion, life member of Diabled American Veterans and life member of Paralyzed Veterans of America.
He will be remembered by his family as a man who loved his God, his family and his country. In spite of his many setbacks in life, his faith in God grew stronger and he was a wonderful example of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Gaston Baptist Church with Bro. Ben Parman, Dr. Matt Brown and Bro. Ray Hall officiating. Burial will be in Gaston Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Pounds Goddard of Booneville; his two daughters, Diane G. (Ronny) Guin and Barbara G. (Danny) Murphy both of Booneville; three granddaughters, Missy (Trint) Baggett of Rienzi, Candi (Ray) Hall of Marietta and Bethany Murphy of Booneville; five great-grandchildren, Savannah, Cole and Bella Baggett, Eli and Sophie Hall; two sisters, Lora Eaton of Marietta and Ruth Strakis of Green Acres, FL; two brothers, Bobby (Joan) Goddard and James (Donnie) Goddard both of Booneville; a sister-in-law, Margaret Goddard; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Charles Crabb, who is like a brother.
Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Tommy and Richard Goddard, three sisters, Ester Geno, Juanita Gann and Mary Helen Rhodes; and his mother and father-in-law, Eldon and Nina Pounds.
