Christine was devoted to her faith, family, church, community and nation. She had to mature quickly after the death of her mother. As a 9 year old she began taking care of her father and 2 younger sisters. She became dedicated and driven and at age 16 borrowed $10.00 from a relative, caught a bus to Booneville, MS and with the help of Mae Brackeen went to work at the Booneville Hospital. She worked hard, studied and became a very talented Nurse. Her career spanned 44 years as she worked at the Booneville Hospital, the Medical Clinic, did private duty nursing and later a surgery nurse in the hospital. She loved her work and it suited her gifts of service and giving. Many will remember her freely giving aid to shut-ins on her way home after work.
Since 1949 she has been a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church teaching various Sunday school classes. Several of her students are now preachers, teachers and deacons. After her husband died she organized the Fairview Ladies Prayer Group. These ladies stretch a dollar a long way serving the needy in the community.
Always very active in UDC and DAR she served in numerous capacities to include UDC Chaplin, hosting a meeting for the State DAR Regen and organizing and presenting Constitution Week information in the schools each year.
Active in the Republican Party, she believed in the clarity and wisdom with which the founding Fathers provided the citizens of the United States a system of good governance. She was very articulate in her beliefs and never wavered in her convictions.
On a cold night in December she purchased a roman candle and was about to light it when a voice behind her said “you can’t shoot off fireworks in the city limits”. It was Deputy J.B. Whitehead and that was the beginning of their life together. They were happily married for 53 years until his death September 22, 2000.
