Joyce Childers Burks, 80, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at The Landmark Community in Booneville, where she has lived for the past 10 years. She was born August 2, 1935 in Rienzi, MS to Millard and Lillian Childers. She was the oldest of 10 children. She was a graduate of Glendale High School and later when she was 50 years old attended NECC for 2 years in the nursing program. She retired from Brown Shoe Co. after 29 years and later worked at Longwood Nursing Home for many years. She was co-owner of Booneville Flowers and Balloons. She was a resident manager at The Landmark Community for 10 years before retiring. She was a caregiver for many years and touched many people’s lives.
A celebration of life for Joyce Childers Burks will be at 2:00 PM Friday, March 11, 2016 at McMillan Funeral Home with Ray Morton of Gentiva Hospice and Elder Cecil Woodruff officiating. Burial will be in Crossroads Cemetery.
She is survived by three children, Judith Mardis and husband Phil of Baldwyn, Barbara Garvin of Jumpertown, and David Burks of Booneville; five grandchildren, Michael Burks, Misty Flurry, Tiffany Hunt, Lee Mardis, and Diana Mardis; fourteen great grandchildren, Reed Flurry, Aiden Sitton, Bella Sitton, Preston Putman, Holleigh Burks, Maddie Burks, Everett Mardis, Owen Mardis, Lyric McKissack, Stoni Glover, Briley Hatfield, Jessie-Faye Hunt, and Miley Sue Hunt; six sisters, Betty Wood of Tupelo, Joanne Merril of San Diego, CA, Glenda Baldwin of Booneville, Paulette Burns of Hinkle, Karen Jones of Booneville, and Beth Pharr of Booneville; and one special sister-in-law, Libby Odum of Coldwater.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernie Burks; one son, Ronny “Stony” Burks; two great grandchildren, Hunter Flurry and Kennadie Mardis; and three brothers, Wayne Childers, Charles Childers, and Tony Childers.
Pallbearers will be: Michael Burks, Reed Flurry, Lee Mardis, Jeff Hunt, J.C. Newby, Jeremy Pharr, Bill Childers, Lee Sitton, and Dustin Childers. Honorary pallbearer will be: Wayne Sappington.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
Visitation will be 5-9pm on Thursday, March 10, 2016 and until service time on Friday, at McMillan Funeral Home.
