Thomas P. McCarthy, 69, passed away on May 18, 2024, at Reo Vista Healthcare Center in San Diego, California. Tom was a resident of Coronado, California, where he lived for over 40 years and touched the lives of many with his intelligence, humor, kindness, and thoughtfulness. Born in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, Tom graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1972. He was an exemplary student, a proud member of the National Honor Society, and competed as a member of the boys' tennis team. He was also a manager of the boys basketball team. Tom continued his academic journey at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating in 1976.
During his time at Vanderbilt, he was a dedicated member of the Naval ROTC and the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. Following his graduation, Tom served honorably in the Navy as an officer on the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk for five years, demonstrating his commitment to his country. After his service, Tom found a home and a community in Coronado, where he worked for over four decades at the Coronado Cab Company, becoming a cherished figure in the community. Tom was an avid reader and a passionate sports fan, always enthusiastic about his Vanderbilt Commodores and Notre Dame college teams. He also ardently supported the San Diego Padres and Chargers, sharing his sports zeal with friends and family.
Tom was the son of the late Thomas J. and Eleanor (Brewton) McCarthy. He was predeceased by his sister Ann McCarthy Benes and brother-in-law Frankie Benes. He is survived by his loving sister Mary McCarthy, Dennis McCarthy, several cousins and his dear friends Jack and Margaret Rich. Services for Tom were held privately. The family requests that any contributions in Tom's memory be made to Paws of Coronado, 1395 1st St., Coronado, CA, 92118, reflecting Tom’s love for animals. Tom’s legacy of kindness, humor, and dedication will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the Coronado community.
