Rodrigo, fondly known as Rod/Rudy, was born to Pedro and Noniluna Abengoza on March 30,1939 in Ragay, Camarines Sur, Philippines. He was the fourth oldest of six children. After attending a few years of college, he joined the United States Navy in 1960 as a recruit and was stationed in Galveston,Texas where he met his partner for life, Lolita, which he married in May 1966.
With his hard work and skills, Rod climbed the ranks to Chief Petty Officer, ultimately retiring after 20 years. He did a few semesters at San Diego State University but rejoined the workforce in 1985 at the San Diego Metropolitan Transit system (SD Trolley). He held various positions and eventually promoted to Maintenance Supervisor. He retired from the trolley in 2003. He was a great example of a hardworking and dedicated person that was valuable to his work as clear from his many promotions and love and respect from his staff/crew.
Rod held many roles in his life from Trolley Supervisor to Navy Chief but his favorite role was being a husband, father, grandfather/poppa. He was always there to help with school pick-ups of the grandkids and playing with them in the backyard. He helped with school math and projects. His grilled steaks were a favorite menu item and he always ensured we were set up for Sunday family lunches. He also loved to play the penny slots at Sycuan! While Rod left us too quickly, the impact he had on the family will continue to live on as he was a model example of a person of faith, patience and love.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lolita (Abby), his children (Allan, Arlen & Pearson Reyes, Alex & Jennifer), his 6 beautiful grandchildren (Miranda, Alyssa, AJ, Anthony, Adam, Aly), his sisters (Hermie, Ludy) and his 26 nieces and nephews.
The Abengoza family will host a visitation on Monday, May 6th at 4pm at Glen Abbey Mortuary and a funeral on Tuesday, May 7th at 11am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bonita, CA.
