On Saturday, July 1, 2023, Roberto Del Mar Filomeno, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 94 leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Born on February 4, 1929, in Manila, Philippines, Roberto's life was one characterized by passion, craftsmanship, and selflessness. He faithfully served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1976. Through his service, Roberto exemplified the noble qualities of honor, courage, and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on his everyone around him. In 1965 he served on a US destroyer during the Vietnam conflict. And did tours of duty in Hawaii, Florida, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and San Diego before retiring from the US Navy 1976. He continued to work for the US military as a civilian employee and received a commendation from the U. S. Navy for inventing an antenna system for navy ships. He retired in 1989.
On October 18, 1964, he married Esperanza “Espie” Enriquez Filomeno, embarking on a lifelong journey of love and companionship. Roberto's role as a devoted husband and father brought him immense joy and fulfillment.
Roberto possessed a remarkable talent for creating and crafting. Trained as a machinist, he channeled his passion into bringing ideas to life. Notably, he built a magnificent houseboat in Cuba that was much admired by friends and family. Friends marveled at his ingenuity in building a rotating rotisserie and bringing a broken-down dune buggy to life. For his children in pursuit of adventure, Roberto built a snow sled using a radar dish igniting the imaginations of many. Additionally, Roberto found solace and joy in fishing, a pastime he cherished. With each cast of the line, he found serenity in nature and created memories that will forever be treasured.
Perhaps Roberto's most remarkable quality was his unwavering generosity. He selflessly put the needs and happiness of others before his own, providing support, kindness, and guidance whenever it was needed. His acts of kindness touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
Roberto is survived by his loving wife Espie and his three children, Eileen, Eric and Edgar. Their lives have been enriched by his presence, and his love will continue to guide and inspire them.
A viewing, funeral service, and committal will be held at Glen Abbey Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita, CA 91902.
