Peter Munoz DeGuzman was born July 17, 1926 in San Carlos, Pangasinan, Philippines to Alberta and Pedro DeGuzman Sr. The second to the youngest of 10 siblings, Peter grew up in the Philippines graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Mapua Institute of Technology, Manila in 1952.
He joined the United States Navy in 1953. Fortuitous events would help Peter to the top, (in his own words), could not …” explain how it happened”. In a time where Filipinos were expected to be “cooks”, Peter rose to the occasion ranking 1st in all of his naval schools, specializing in Electronics and Communications, to eventually become Chief Warrant Officer. Peter is a two-war veteran serving during the Korean War in 1953 and the Vietnam war in 1964. By 1970, he was stationed at the US Naval Communication Station in Guam. He was extremely proud to serve as a Naval Officer, with stories of his time while wearing his trusty veterans hat that seemed to never leave his head. After 21 globetrotting years, Peter retired from the US Navy. He continued applying his engineering ingenuity as the Chief Engineer at San Diego State University until 1986.
Peter met the love of his life, Flora and married in 1958, raising a family of two children, Norman and Jeanne. Being technically resourceful, a gadgeteer, musically and artistically talented, he proudly shaped his children’s interests and talents in the areas of technology, engineering, music, art, and photography. A wandering soul, his love for travel brought him across the world with his family and loving wife by his side.
Peter was a faithful and devout Catholic, who never forgot his nightly prayers and his trusty rosary by his side. Peter attended weekly mass at Corpus Christi Parish as an usher where he would greet and assist parishioners.
Peter passed away surrounded by family on Monday morning, February 6, 2023 at the age of 96. He now joins his wife, Flora in heaven. He is survived by his younger sister Thelma, son Norman and daughter-in-law Joy, daughter Jeanne and future son-in-law Robert; grandchildren Alyssa, Anthony; Cami and grandson-in-law Ermie and great-grandson Parker.
