Mario Lagurin Arellano, age 92, loving father of six and devoted husband, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 17, 2023. Mario was born June 3, 1931 in San Pablo Laguna, Philippines to Placido Arellano and Valeria Arellano. He was the youngest of nine children. In high school he attended Ateneo de San Pablo. He continued his education at the University of the Philippines where he majored in agriculture. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955. He married Charity Averion in 1958 and moved his family to the United States in 1965.
He retired from the Navy as Chief Machinist Mate and served honorably for 20 years in service to our country. After his military service he worked at the post office, NASSCO and San Diego Gas and Electric. In 1973 he purchased his first investment property.
Mario was a spiritual, kind and generous man. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was active in many church activities. He worked tirelessly to support his large family. He loved gardening, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid ping pong player and enjoyed watching boxing and tennis matches.
Mario is survived by his wife, Charity Arellano; daughters Cynthia Chenier, Mildred Ellis, Angelyn Gutierrez and Christine Showalter; sons Ben Arellano and Mario Arellano, Jr.; grandsons Michael Wallingford, Warren Gutierrez and Evan Arellano; and granddaughters Ashley Arellano, Ariel Showalter, Bethany Arellano, Camille Arellano and Delilah Arellano.
A Visitation for Mario will be held Friday, October 6, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at The Orchid Pavilion. A Funeral Mass will occur Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. A Committal Service will occur Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Glen Abbey Memorial Park. A Reception will follow at Chula Vista Golf Course from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
