Maria Herrera Alvarez

Maria de Jesus Herrera Alvarez, 81, entered into eternal peace on January 4, 2018. She was born on May 23, 1936 in Mexicali, B.C. She became a naturalized citizen on December 12, 1968 in El Centro, CA. She worked as a social worker at EOC in El Centro, CA. Maria was a very loving lady who loved to sing. Above all, family was most important to her. In 1978, she met the love of her life, Samuel R. Alvarez. They married in 1979 in Yuma, AZ. They resided in Northern California until 2012 when Maria relocated to San Diego, CA to be by her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents Margarito Herrera and Emilia Costilla; her husband Samuel R. Alvarez; her brother Fernando Herrera; her sons Marc A. Rios and Robert H. Rios

She is survived by her sister Enriqueta Lira and Tomasa Vega; her brother Juan Herrera; her daughter Margie Rosa; and her sons Albert Rios and Oscar Rios. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday January 16, 2018 at Glen Abbey Mortuary from 5:00-9:00 pm. Mass will be on Wednesday January 17, 2018 at 10:00 am at Glen Abbey Mortuary in the Chapel of Roses. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Reception to follow.
