Francisco Gil, MD known to some as “Pancho”, was born on September 12, 1948 in Tijuana Mexico. He was the son of Porfiria and Baldomero Gil and was one of 10 brothers and sisters. He passed away on July 10, 2020 after battling with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Celia Gil, along with his daughters, Catalina Gil-Prewitt and Anna Celia Gil-Ochoa and one grandson, Damian Ochoa.
Dr. Gil graduated medical school from the Universidad Autonoma of Baja California (UABC) in Tijuana, BC in 1986 and went on from there to complete his U.S residency at St Mary’s of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago Illinois, specializing in Family Medicine. He established his medical practice in San Diego, CA shortly after and served the community of National City as a Primary Care Physician for a duration of over 30 years. He was a God-fearing man who loved Jesus and shared that love with anyone and everyone he came in contact with. With that love in his heart, he touched many lives. His kind-hearted and gentle spirit were a comfort to his patients and family during the most difficult of times. He was always present whenever he was needed, at the bedside of the sick or suffering to provide words of hope or a song. He was a healer of both the body and the soul.
Dr. Gil was active in his faith community in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He enjoyed leading worship services and giving bible studies on a weekly basis. He and his wife Celia enjoyed opening their home to host weekly prayer and study groups and continued to do so for many years until they were no longer able due to his illness.
Anyone who knew Dr. Gil knew of his love for music, particularly opera, classical music and hymns which he loved to sing with his distinctive, privileged voice. He loved many hymns, such as “Love Was When” and “Mas Alla del Sol”. He went to sleep in Jesus, with the assurance of waking to see his Savior face to face.
On the day of his passing, Francisco Gil was surrounded by his wife and two daughters, his brothers, and family who sang his favorite songs and hymns to provide comfort. He went to sleep peacefully. We now hold fast to God’s promise that we will be reunited with him very soon.
