Erik was raised with one sibling. He had brother, Rene Reyes. Erik was usually involved in all sorts of activities with his brother Rene. They experienced some rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many special life experiences over the years.
A typical teenager, Erik had a fairly happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. He graduated from San Ysidro High School in 2007. He enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. Erik will be remembered by his classmates and friends for being an extremely bright student. He graduated high school with a 4.0 grade point average.
Besides his excellent grades, Erik accomplished much more throughout his lifetime. This made him stand out amongst his peers. In middle school he was awarded the title of "Spelling Bee Champion". Having a strong faith in the church, he was a very devoted church volunteer. He also loved being a talented musician. He was a member of a juvenile mariachi band. Erik also took on the initiative of becoming a U.S. citizen. He went through the entire process on his own, without any help or special treatment from anyone.
Erik always showed that he was an extremely strong individual who was capable of proving others wrong whenever doubted. After being hospitalized for three months due to suffering from a cardiac arrest, he fought and made a full recovery. This act proved all of his doctors wrong. Even though he was physically disabled, he was never shy and never said " I CAN'T". He lived everyday with a smile on his face, giving a spark of joy to everyone around him.
Sadly, Erik passed away on August 6, 2010 in the comfort of his home in Chula Vista, California. Erik fought a brave battle against muscular dystrophy. He is survived by his father, Hipolito Reyes; mother, Adela Reyes and brother, Rene Reyes. Services were held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in San Ysidro, California. Erik was laid to rest in Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, California.
Simply stated, Erik was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Erik leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Mr. Erik Reyes.
