My Dad's Eulogy, read on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the Viewing

Good evening, I am Shirley, the eldest child of Edison Sanz.  On behalf of my mom Keiko, my siblings Marilyn, Junior  his wife Beth, Susan and Ray we thank you for paying your respects.  

We were all at my dad's beside and blessed to be able to say our goodbyes before he departed peacefully at Scripps Mercy Hospital.  

We have heard and read many stories of how wonderful he was as a relative and friend. 

He was also a devoted and loving husband and father.  He took good care of us, he was full of life, and his laughter was so infectious.

My dad leaves us with many happy memories:

•Many trips to Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm, the circus and ice capades (I think he enjoyed the latter two more than we did)
•His love for the Del Mar Fair and the fried zucchini, barbecue and ice cream
•Road Trips
•Family Parties 
At the house, beach, and parks  
•Visayan Circle events
•Grunion Runs
•Cooking
•His barbecue, prime rib, turkey with all the trimmings, and my favorite: the best fresh lumpias ever
•The way he always called us baby  
•His collection of gadgets and the newest technology

And how he: 
•Hosted relatives and friends in our home
•Attended our events when he was not out to sea
•Did our taxes 
•Cooked for our parties
•Cooked for the family on holidays, birthdays and celebrations

He wasn't perfect, he had flaws; made some bad decisions; but he was perfect for us and we love him.

My dad was adventurous; he liked trying new things, and was always doing something.  He was always actively involved in a house project, event planningalways doing something.  

I remember when he retired thinking that's how I want my retirement to be.  He and my mom traveled months at a time to Japan and Philippines, and all over the U.S. visiting relatives in New York, Florida, Chicago, Las Vegas  and also Canada. 

When I was partying in my 20's & 30's so were my parents (not at the same club); but if they didn't have a party or event to attend he took my mom dancing at the CPO Club and they would meet up with friends. 

Spiritually. I believe my dad feared God and that he claimed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.  This brings me great comfort.  I remember the bumper sticker he placed on his truck:  Jesus, I Trust in You.  However, I'm not sure if the bumper sticker was a statement of his faith or intended to warn whoever was driving behind him. 

As I was going through my memoirs looking for pictures I came across postcards written to me when my dad was overseas; these were dated in 1973.  Most of them started with I haven't heard from you in while; or sorry I haven't written in a while.

I like to read a couple to you:

Postmarked April 6, 1973

Dear Shirley, Hi baby, I haven't heard from you in quite a while now.  I hope you haven't forgotten me.  It's nice and quiet here in the Gulf and not much to do.  I am doing alright, I wish you all the same.  About your bible ask your Uncle Ben to get you one for I haven't seen one that you might like.  Tell him I'll pay him back.  Take good care of yourself and your sister & brother and God bless you all. Love Dad 

Postmarked April 20, 1973

Hi, It's quite a while now that I haven't heard from you.  I wish you keep on writing me.  Right now we are in B.K. and its sure nice to be here but every thing is very expensive.  Don't worry about your bible.  I've got you one and I'll bring it along with me.  See you soon.  Love Dad

I remember asking him for a Bible and he did bring one back for me as he promised.  It was my first Bible in a red cover and I was excited to able to write in it and highlight passages that spoke out to me.  I went on to purchase many more Bibles as I grew older and forgot what happened to the one he gave me.  

I was looking for something in his office this past week and I came across my Bible on his shelf; not far from a Bible I gave him a few years ago for Father's Day.  It's pretty beat up but it has my markings and I will treasure this beautiful memory of my dad along with his postcards.
   
I personally want to thank my mom, Marilyn, Ray, Sue, Junior and Beth for all you did to take care of my dad.  I thank God often for blessing me with a loving and caring family.  Truly all glory and praise go to God for His hand in my dad's life.  

In closing, please pray along with me.

Heavenly Father and Almighty God, we are grateful and thank you for the breath of life you gave my dad and the impact he made on those here; either personally or through his wife or children.  My hope is he is with you now in the presence of Jesus and we who truly believe will one day all be reunited in heaven.

May we have our time of mourning and in your perfect timing dance once again  as the Bible says there is a time to weep and a time to cry; a time to mourn and a time to dance.  

May we stay connected with one another, love one another, and I ask for your favor and covering as we transition and journey on with life without my dad.  

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

As I reflect with the realization that today is my Uncle Edison's viewing, it is with fond memories and a feeling of loss. I was only 4 years old when I arrived to the United States and met the Sanz family. I remember weekly family gatherings and parties, Visayan Circle meetings at Fava Hall, family vacations in a RV, yearly 4th of July celebrations at Del Mar Fair, and of my Uncle Edison and Auntie Kieko taking care of us when my parents would go back to the Philippines and we would stay with them for a month at a time. I was so blessed to have such a loving, caring uncle and extended family. My thoughts and prayers are with Auntie Kieko, my cousins Shirley Sanz, Marilyn, Junior, Susan, and Raymund today. Below is a picture of my mom, Mely Sacramento and her cousin Uncle Edison at the last family reunion in 2013. We love you Uncle and will miss you. Rest in Peace forever until we met again in heaven.

Uncle Edison, our Second Father

Our imagination of Uncle Edison before we ever first met him was that he was an adventurer. Our father, the late Engr. Enrique J. Sanz, would regale us of stories about the adventures of the Sanz Family in Cotabato and how they ended up in Davao City after World War II. 

Our grandfather, Paterno Sanz, was the first lawyer of Guimaras Island, who married Leonor Javellana, daughter of Don Melquiades Javellana and Paz Valencia Darroca of Jaro, Iloilo in Central Philippines. Uncle Edison was their second son, who was quite different from the rest of his siblings. Our father Enrique, who was the youngest child, would tell us that Uncle Edison was the very reason why we are now in Davao City. Uncle Edison wanted to see the world but our grandfather, who had big dreams for his son, would like him to be an engineer or a lawyer like him. The opportunity came when Uncle Edison heard that the United States navy, which was stationed in Davao City, was recruiting Filipinos to join the service. Uncle Edison decided to stowaway and left Cotabato City where the Sanz family had a fleet of fishing boats and several businesses including our grandfather's law office. Upon learning about this, Lolo Paterno went in search of Uncle Edison bringing the whole family with him.  True enough, Uncle Edison was only 16 years old at that time. But upon seeing how much he wanted to board the ship, our Lolo Paterno decided to let him go. 

The first time we met Uncle Edison was the first time we also met Auntie Keiko, Junior, Susan and Raymond. As a typical Filipino custom, one by one we made mano (blessing) to this man, who was wearing a polo shirt tucked into a pair of cargo shorts, and a beret hat. He also spoke Ilonggo but sometimes with a slang. What struck us most about Uncle Edison was that he was a gregarious, extroverted guy, who was quite different from his brothers who seem to be all introverted, but also as hilarious as he is. He seemed to be intimidating at first, but Auntie Keiko charmed us with her funny English. So we figured that he must also be a very good man because he has a very kind and gentle woman beside him. 

As we grew older and he would stay with us in our home for months, we came to know about his adventures in Korea, how he met Auntie Keiko in Japan, and how proud he is of his children  Ate Shirley, Marilyn, Junior, Susan and Raymond. He would talk about them and would show us pictures of them that it seems like we also grew up with them.  Most importantly, we came to know a man who was a softie inside. You see our parents have trained us to work for something that we want, and not to pester them when we see a toy or a dress that we like in the mall. So we would just curiously touch these items or cast a cursory look on them. But Uncle Edison had a quick eye, and he was a very generous uncle. The next thing we know, he already bought it for us. We remember how he also bought a battery operated toy bike for Charina's only son Xandro. We were shocked when Uncle Edison brought it home knowing how expensive it is. Our instinct was to return it. But when we saw the joy in Uncle Edison's eyes seeing his then three year-old apo or grandson hugging and kissing him over and over, and riding it around the house and the whole neighborhood, we acquiesced. That summer, Xandro seemed to worship the ground that Uncle Edison walked. He simply followed his Popsie Edison wherever he went. 

Whenever we hear news that Uncle Edison and Auntie Keiko are coming to visit us, we would all be so excited especially us kids. This is because he would cook us these special meals that he can only whip up so deliciously. He would cook us turkey with all its stuffing and cranberry sauce. He would make us burger with his special recipe. And who would ever forget his cadios and nilagpang, both Ilonggo dishes that totally spoiled our palette. For the record, no one has yet to beat his cadios. Not even our mom Julie or Auntie Angging, Uncle Ephraim's wife, could do this. 

When papa got sick and needed a quadruple bypass, Uncle Edison stepped in for his youngest sibling. If it were not for him, we would not be able to have six more years with papa. Uncle Edison, even if he was far away in California, was our pillar of strength. He was our second father, who we could always count on during our most challenging and dark moments. With his passing, we know that our lives would never be the same again. Uncle Edison was the last of the Sanz brothers, who helped shape us to become the persons that we are now. He was also the one, who set an example for us to have the courage to pursue our dreams by simply boarding the boat without much fanfare but with lots of faith and guts. 

We will surely miss Uncle Edison, our second father.

We will always have happy memories of your delicious turkey on thanksgiving day, your contagious and extremely loud laughter, and your warm smile and hugs. Remembering Edison

When a loved one becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.
My dear Uncle Edison Javellana Sanz is an invaluable treasure, a truly remarkable man. He was a valiant retired US Navy, a reliable friend and a responsible brother to Engr. Efraim J. Sanz, Augusto J. Sanz and my father Engr. Enrique J. Sanz who are all resting in peace. He was a supportive father and a loving husband. To sum it all up, he was a great man.
Let me share our story and how I have come to deeply love my uncle. He loved to visit the Philippines particularly Davao City where me and my parents reside. During his vacations, which would last for 3 to 5 months, he would usually stay in our home and I was with him wherever he wanted to go. I drove him and his wife, Aunty Keiko around the city. I always came along with him via Negros Navigation, a ship he loved to ride going home to Iloilo especially Buenavista Guimaras, whom he considered his second home because it is where the Javellanas hailed from. He would also take time to visit his cousins and other relatives in distant locations like Gensan, Koronadal and Banga. That's how he valued family.
He treated me like one of his daughters, and for that we seemed inseparable. I must say that Uncle Edison was someone to remember with warmth, think of with pride and cherish with love.
Uncle Edison had nothing but love and support for his family. He was a man who was overflowing with concern and compassion for others. I remember a time when he personally picked me up at the LAX Airport. He drove almost 3 hours from San Diego. He took me to Disneyland at Anaheim just because he knew I loved to go there. And that time he was the one who lend his time accompanying me with those silly rides. Those are happy moments.
One of our many heartfelt conversations was about my dream. I wanted to pursue my dream as a baker in New York. He asked me how. I told him I will do whatever it takes to fulfill my dream even if it means doing odd jobs, just to survive the challenging life in the Big Apple. And so I did. I flew to New York very eager to accomplish my dream. And Uncle Edison, being the sympathetic man that he was, would always call and check on me, asking me just about everything and so from time to time, he would send me allowance to survive New York City. And I did survive, thanks to him. And I knew I made him proud by pursuing and living my dream, when I went home to the Philippines, he sent me tons of baking equipments, a reward for my triumph. He had given me the greatest gift he can give me, he believed in me.
Back when we were in the Philippines, he saw me having a hard time baking using a small oven and instantly he was concerned, he felt like I was barely sleeping because the cake orders were pouring in. Without uncertainty, he bought me a big, first-class oven, not considering the cost all because he wanted what was best for me, my business and my passion. I owe my success to him. He was and always will be the strong pillar that built my business, Cake Creations.
He was a big and relevant part of my life and my family, Last 2011 when my father had a quadruple heart bypass operation at Philippine Heart Center, he never hesitated to help us financially until my father passed away. He was there for us.
Then on year 2007, I called him to announce my engagement with Dodoy Miraflores, Uncle was so proud of mine and Dodoy's commitment for each other. I asked him to come home to Davao because I would love for him to walk me down the aisle, but he lovingly declined because of his poor condition, so I told him that it was okay since his health was more important.
Then 2 weeks before my wedding, 5 balikbayan boxes arrived filled with beautiful things, like bed sheets, pillow cases, kitchen utensils and the likes which I needed back when I was starting to have a new home with my husband to be. Of course, it came from him, an early wedding present. And I was happy because he always remembers.
And a week before my wedding, we were so busy accommodating our relatives who were arriving from USA, Iloilo and Koronadal. It was when my uncle, Fr. Cornelio Jaranilla , OCD called asking me a favor to arranged his hotel accommodation that I had the biggest surprise of my life. I came to know unexpectedly that a certain Mr. Sanz had already reserved a room and so I concluded that uncle Edison made sure I was to be one happy bride. He came for me even with his failing health. He never missed a momentous milestone of my life. He walked with me towards the altar, just like he walked with me in my life's journey. Uncle Edison was always there for me just like he was always there for the rest of the family.
Auntie Keiko, thank you for your love and devotion to Uncle Edison and for taking care of him until his last breath. He was a happy man but he was always happier with you.
To Ate Shirley, Raymund, Junior, Susan and Marilyn, thank you for sharing Uncle Edison with us, we are all lucky to have lived with a great man. He was someone to look up to no matter how tall we have grown. Truly, the love of a father is one of nature's greatest masterpieces, how wonderful it is to experience such masterpiece firsthand.
Tito Panny, thank you for being like a brother to Uncle. Surely, you were a valuable part of who he was, a great man.
To Uncle Edison, words cannot express how grateful I am for you, it may have taken me too long to write this because there's no easy way to handle the truth that you are gone, but despite our sorrow, I would like to believe that you have lived a full life; you had good times with good friends and unforgettable moments with your loved ones. And that's what really matters. As what they say, it's not the years in life that matters but the life in years and that we can never lose what we deeply love for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us. Thank you for the love and support that you generously shared, for the time and effort you have selflessly given and for being the best uncle you have become. You are an inspiration.
Uncle Edison, surely you are in paradise right now, joyful and free, send our love and kisses to Papa, Uncle Efraim, Uncle Ago, Lolo Paterno and Lola Auno.

To the family of the late Manong Edison Sanz, I light this candle in memory of a truly memorable & remarkable person. Our sincerest condolences and we offer masses and prayers for the family especially to his widow Manang Keiko. From Javellana family of Mantangingi, Buenavista, Guimaras.

The first time I met Manong Edison is when I was 16.  I felt very welcomed at your home.  I remember the dinners he cooked.  It was nothing short of a feast.  Your mom Kiko-San, Shirley, Junior, Marilyn, Susan and Raymond gave me so many happy memories.  I have grown so close to your family that time and distance really doesn't matter.  It's seams like we can pick up when we last met.  Manong Edison made that all possible with his compassion for my father and helping us in our time of need.  I have highest respect, admiration and love for Manong Edison.  I will always remember his boisterous laughter.

We will always remember the jokes and the laughter, not to mention M. Edison generosity. We will miss him and so grateful we have gotten to know him. We are sad for your loss.

My heartfelt condolence Kiko San, Shirley, Marilyn, Junior, Susan & Raymond.  Nong Edison is like my older brother.

Just know that I am praying for you Susan and your family.

I just lost a very dear friend and shipmate. I met Eddie in Pittsburg, Ca. There he introduce me to my wife Henrietta. We were both young sailors at the time, and help me meet the Nazarettas, who became my adapted family. Eddie is like a brother to me, I will miss him dearly. We are sincerely saddened that our beloved Nong Edison joined his Maker in heaven. The only comforting thoughts are our memories every Thanksgiving Day, partaking Nong's special turkey, ham and other goodies, followed by watching TV with the kids and later, parlor games. We love you Keiko San. Thank you for your generosity, love and concern. We are grateful that after four months in the Philippines, we were able to visit you and Keiko San last month.
