Ben was married on January 5, 1960 and is survived by his wife Consuelo (Connie) Hebreo DeLeon and their six children Mary Ann and her husband Allan, David John, Dan and his wife Susan, Marlene and her husband Dave, Margie, and Marsha and her husband Randy; his eight grandchildren Danielle, Elise, Sarah, Darrien, Delaney, Reggie, Daniel, and Hannah; his two great grandchildren Finley and River; and his four surviving siblings Dely, Ellen, Josie, and Merlin.
Ben joined the Navy in 1954 where he served as a cook on several military ships where he was responsible for preparing food and keeping sailors well-fed. During his service, he was stationed in Subic Bay Philippines, Honolulu Hawaii, Milton Florida with his final duty station in San Diego California. He retired from the Navy on September 30, 1974 after proudly serving his country for over 20 years.
After retiring from the military, he worked an additional 20 years at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, Balboa Hospital as a civilian in custodial services. Once he fully retired, he found joy in spending time with his family and caring for them while continuing his passion for cooking, especially Filipino cuisine. Fun fact: Ben often made cute noises and whistled while cooking. He loved to dance, sing and listen to gospel music, and watch Filipino programming. Additionally, Ben continued to enjoy traveling with his wife Connie and other friends and family.
On June 5, 2013, Ben suffered a stroke leaving him paralyzed on his right side and unable to walk. The Lord blessed us all, especially his family post-stroke and were amazed by his ability to beat Covid and survive several illnesses including pneumonia. Ben’s courage, and love for his family and the Lord never ceased to amaze us all, and his determination served as a testament and dedication to God. In Philippians 4:13, it states, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Life is a gift and we thank Ben for being a gift from God and for his resilience, faith, and will to live. On April 23, 2024, while surrounded by his loved ones, the Lord called Ben home. We take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace surrounded by love and light.
