Dr. Adolphus Cole Jr. was born on February 27, 1943, in Shreveport, Louisiana to Adolph Ealy (Cole) and Anna Elizabeth Holloman both also from Louisiana. The young family moved west and Adolph Ealy changed his last name to Cole. He got the name from a billboard advertising a product with the name. Reverend Adolph Cole and Anna Elizabeth Cole, had a total of six children. Dr. Cole is survived by his brother Lionel Cole and sister Landi Mitchell. His wife of more than fifty years Jovita Cole whom he credited with making him a doctor.
As a young man Adolphus had a strong and curious mind. Adolphus loved to dance and music was an important part of his life. Some of his favorite groups included the Isley Brothers, the Commodores, Earth, Wind and Fire, Chuck Mangione, James Taylor and Barry White, who he went to elementary school with.
During the turbulent sixties at the suggestion of one of his window cleaning business patrons, he decided to go back to school to become a medical doctor, the first in his family. While working during the day to support himself and his family, he went to school at night to obtain his General Education Degree, commonly known as the G.E.D. Adolphus then went onto San Diego Community College to obtain an Associate of Arts Degree prior to enrolling at the University of California, at San Diego, Revelle Campus. After his junior year in college, Adolphus was accepted into the medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where he obtained his medical degree.
After completing his training, he moved to San Diego where in 1979 he established a primary-care clinic treating the underserved community. Dr. Cole's Medical Clinic serviced the impoverished area of Southeast San Diego for more than a decade. The medical practice that Dr. Cole established, although it has changed hands over the years, still operates till this day and serves as a medical resource for that community some 45-years later.
To relax, he enjoyed fishing and running. He took numerous fishing trips to Channel Island National Park and the Island of Catalina. Unfortunately, some of these trips ended by rescue from the Coast Guard Helicopter!
Adolphus started his family young and the Cole Family has grown to include many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and beyond. He was very proud of his family!
