Born in Brunswick County on Aug. 24, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Anson Lee and Lizzie Australia Hogan Clemmons. Lucille was a longtime member of Gospel Center Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Eddie Varnam; and a sister, Eunice Hart.
Survivors include a son, Bryan Varnam and wife, Tami, of Varnamtown; Gail Smith and husband, Ted, of Ash; two brothers, James “Bo” Clemmons and Robert Lee Cheers; two sisters, Jessie Dillon and Bobbie DeStefano; grandchildren, Katie Smith, Melody Smith Siau and husband, Robert, Brandon Varnam and wife, Nicole and Elizabeth Varnam; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Jones, Logan Jones, Tyler Varnam and Nicholas Varnam.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in Gospel Center Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
