It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of Dr. Alan Saunders, the cherished husband of MargaretAnn Saunders for over six decades, and the revered father of Jeffrey Saunders and his wife, Lea. Dr. Saunders departed from this world on August 29th, leaving behind a legacy of education, love, and dedicated service. He is survived by his adoring family: his wife MargaretAnn; his son Jeff and wife Lea; his three grandchildren, Elijah, Alanna, and Gabriel; and two great-grandchildren, Akasha and Omar.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Alan's journey was one of remarkable transformation and tenacity. Despite facing academic challenges at Granby High School, where he failed 17 subjects, his determination led him to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his service, his unyielding spirit propelled him to achieve a Doctorate in Education from Duke University. As a dedicated educator and President of numerous private boarding schools, Dr. Saunders profoundly impacted the lives of thousands of students.
His distinguished service at Millersburg Military Institute earned him the honor of Kentucky Colonel, a testament to his pivotal role in establishing the institute as a state military school of Kentucky. Dr. Saunders was frequently recognized by former students in unexpected places, always greeting them with the warmth and kindness he was known for.
Above all, Dr. Saunders was a devoted family man, profoundly in love with his wife, MargaretAnn. His affection for her was a story he joyfully shared with everyone, a testament to their enduring partnership.
Dr. Saunders' life concluded as peacefully as it was lived, beside his beloved MargaretAnn. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A service to honor the remarkable life of Dr. Alan Saunders will be held at Holden Beach Chapel on Saturday, November 11, at 2 PM. The ceremony will be followed by an intimate family gathering at their home.
In lieu of flowers, the Saunders family kindly requests that donations be made in Dr. Saunders' memory to Habitat for Humanity Brunswick County or the Brunswick Arts Council, causes close to his heart.
