James LaVerne Wolf of Boca Raton died Sunday, June 29, 2014 at his residence, where his family had gathered. Born September 1, 1920 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Minnie Mae Dorwart and Samuel Charles Wolf. He was predeceased by his brothers Charles Henry Wolf and Ira Franklin Wolf. Jim is survived by his daughter Tracy Lynne Wolf Dickey, her husband William, and their daughter Margaret of Boca Raton, and by his daughter Mary Montgomery Wolf and her children Beck and Robin of Athens, Georgia.
With his brothers Charles and Ira, Jim attended the Hershey Industrial School, now the Milton Hershey School. During World War Two, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving to defend the Panama Canal and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the War, on the GI Bill, he attended the Pennsylvania State University, where he lettered in varsity football and varsity lacrosse. There he earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in education.
Returning to Panama, Jim taught social studies at Curundu Junior High School, and he coached football at the Canal Zone Junior College, now a branch of Florida State University. In retirement, he devoted himself to his daughters and to his three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 12 at the Chapel of Saint Andrew, the Reverend Charles Browning presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Panama Canal Museum at https://www.uff.ufl.edu/OnlineGiving/FundDetail.asp?FundCode=016629 .
