This news makes me so sad.  G. Alex was one of my extra favorite professors - so interesting and fun and engaging, and just friendly.  He'd have the grad students over for blue crab dinners and came to our Halloween party as "Fetid" Marsh.  What a hoot.  I remember him bringing little Lex on field trips when he was about 8. He shared Cammy with us too (this was back in the late 70's).  Anyway, he taught me a lot that ended up being the basis of my career in environmental regulation and restoration at Florida DEP. Grad school at FAU was the best because of great teachers like him (and Dobkin, Courtney, Austin, Adams...)  Good times.  Valuable times. Thanks for everything, Dr. Marsh.

Dr. Marsh was my major professor while attended graduate school for my masters of science degree at FAU, Boca Raton.  I didn't know it at the time but I think our class was his first as a profressor.  Without any reservations, I can proudly claim the he was the BEST teacher and mentor in my whole student lifetime.  I just learned about his death today and wish the family my condolences.  It is odd, but just last night I had dinner with Woody Lee another student of Marsh and we were regaling all our great times while attending FAU under Dr. Marsh.  He taught me all I knew at that time about marine ecology and fresh water ecology, and which lead me directly out of graduate school to my job as a marine biologist at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce, Florida.  That was 40 years ago- I am still here at HBOI as a full Research Professor and we are now part of FAU (again, come full circle).  Again I give the family my best wishes.  John Reed

I had not known Dr. Marsh for very long, but found out we knew a lot of people in common both from VIMS and Florida Atlantic.  His expertise will be sorely missed.

Alex will be sorely missed by us all at the Beaufort History Museum. He was dedicated to sharing the history of his adopted home town with visitors and to supporting the museum's mission. Alex was a truly kind and gracious gentleman and we were fortunate to know him. Please know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.

I am so very sorry to hear of Mr. Marsh's passing. I have been his hairdresser in Beaufort for several years at Michael's. We will miss him, he was an interesting person,I loved our chats the short time he was sitting in my chair. I want to let  the family know they will be in my thoughts and prayers. Alex contributed so greatly to the ecological well being of Dataw Island and the Lowcountry of So. Carolina!. Alex was a founding board member of the Dataw Island Conservancy and as such, he educated hundreds of us on the glory and privilege of living in accord with nature.
