Dr. David McMullin Fowler, 70, of Pompano Beach, Florida passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. David was born in Auburn, New York, on April 27, 1951, a son of the late Deforest and Gertrude McMullin Fowler. David grew up on a family-owned and operated apple farm outside Wolcott, New York
Growing up on the farm, he learned common sense and acquired a broad range of knowledge and a strong work ethic. He had a quick wit and a great sense of humor, He was a humble man and kind to everyone. He was a wonderful father and husband, His nephews and niece were close to him and many times sought his advice, He would encourage them in their challenges providing valuable advice and support, They all loved their “Uncle David”.
He was a 1969 graduate of the North Rose-Wolcott Central School, Wolcott, NY. He was awarded the RPI Award in Math and Science and a New York State Regents Scholarship. His nickname was “The Jolly Green Giant”. His phrase was “Years wrinkle the skin, but lack of enthusiasm wrinkles the soul”. He was a member of the National Honor Society. He, along with two of his classmates, were chosen to participate in a TV program that was a scholastic competition game called “It’s Academic”. He was a member of the High School Choir and Glee Clue, David was always a leader and was President of his Junior and Senior Class, and a class officer his Freshman and Sophomore years. He played the French Horn in the band and was selected to the “All County Band”. He played basketball for 4 years and played soccer and baseball.
David spent memorable summers at the family cottage while also working on the farm. His early interest in a career in medicine started when volunteering at the local community hospital, and later working in the summer as a nursing assistant in a hospital in Maine. He became a certified small airplane pilot.
He attended Colgate University for one semester, but left after his father’s death. He later went to Center College where he played varsity basketball for three years; David also worked some summers at Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolina as a lifeguard and golf caddy. Center College nominated him for and he won a Rhodes Scholarship. The Rhodes Scholarship funded students normally for two years. He started medical school at Oxford University and was granted a third year of funding for these studies. He finished his final two years of medical school at Cambridge University, He completed his Internship at Tulane University and Residency at the University of Hawaii. He became board certified in internal medicine and emergency medicine. He later attended University of Florida Law School and was awarded a JD degree.
He spent many years working in Emergency Rooms in Washington D.C., and in Florida in the Melbourne, Lakeland and West Palm Beach areas. He served on hospital committees. While attending law school, he commuted every other weekend from Gainesville to Melbourne to work in the emergency room. He was also a legal consultant to hospitals and physicians with regard to medical malpractice issues. He was an active member of the Church on the Hill in Boca Raton, FL. He spoke at national Emergency Physicians Conferences on law related to Emergency Medicine and law related to government relations and hospitals. David spent the last 20 years of his life as an active practicing Emergency physician serving the community of West Pam Beach and serving the facilities he worked in various medical staff committee functions. He was a strong supporter of his children in their education and sports. He attended many volleyball games and triathlons to cheer and encourage when his daughters competed. He loved the game of golf, space exploration.
Surviving David is his loving wife Roberta, his beloved daughters Madeleine age 21 and Hannah age 18 , his sister Margaret Veazey (Dr. James Veazey,), his niece Melanie Veazey (Cory)Bromwich of New Zealand his nephews James Veazey III (Teal) of San Francisco, George Fowler II (Rebecca) of San Francisco, Jason Fowler of Denver and his cousins Robert Fowler (Cyndi), Judy Fowler (David Luitweiler), James Fowler, Virginia Rowe Fowler and Joanne Fowler Ames all of Wolcott New York. He was predeceased by his beloved brother George Fowler.
Immediate services will be held privately. Public services will be scheduled at a later date.
