Thomas P. “Tom” O’Daniel, age 91, of Bloomington, died Thursday at the I.U. Health; Bloomington Hospital. Born October 27, 1925 in Waverly, Kentucky, he was the son of John Anthony and Mary Elizabeth (Hancock) O’Daniel. Tom spent his childhood years in Evansville, IN. He was the owner of Tom O’Daniel Ford, a Bloomington landmark for nearly 30 years. He spent his retirement wintering in St Petersburg, FL with his wife, Dorothy, and summers in Bloomington.
Tom loved golf, fishing, gardening, traveling, cooking and woodworking. He especially enjoyed making furniture for his grandchildren, bird houses and neighborhood book libraries. He was a member of the Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus and the I.U. Varsity Club. He had served in many different capacities over the years including serving as president of both the Coppertree Home Owners board of directors in Bloomington and the Brightwaters Towers Home Owners board of directors in St. Petersburg, Florida, President of the Ford Dealers Advertising Fund, NCM 20 Group and the Monroe County Community Corrections board of directors. He also served as an avid fundraiser for the Xavier University of the Philippines. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Bloomington and St. Raphael Catholic Church in St. Petersburg. Tom was a W.W. II U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by his son, David O’Daniel; three daughters, Donna O’Daniel, Karen Scholl and Jayne Hendricks; two sons-in-law, Jim Scholl and Roger Hendricks; eleven grandchildren, Nicole Pinnock, Alicia Harvey, Brittany Garza, Paige O’Daniel, Alyssa Lyle, Shaun Morris, Carolyn Scholl, Christa Scholl, Anna Ruhs, Emily Stone and Tom Hendricks and nine great-grandchildren and one brother, Maurice O’Daniel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy M. (Dierlam) O’Daniel in January 2016 and to whom he was married to in 1948 and eight brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Father Daniel Mahan officiating. Entombment will follow in the Valhalla Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home; 4150 E. Third St. where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Bloomington.
