In December, 1943, he entered the US Army and served with the 65th Infantry Division in Europe until 1946. From 1947 until 1950 he played professional baseball with the farm clubs of the Brooklyn Dodgers. At the same period he was pursuing his education as a geology student. He received both a B.S. in geology (1952) and an A.M. in geology (1953).
He was employed by Chevron Petroleum Corporation for 26 years and then later for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. His career was spent mainly in the Rocky Mountain region and the Gulf Coast.
In 1993 he returned to Bloomington, IN, where he could follow IU basketball more closely. He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and enjoyed being on the Bible Studies fellowship with his friends.
He married Joyce Smith on February 6, 1951. They have two children, Marilyn Vance Hanser, deceased, and Mark Vance and his wife Kathy of Marvin, NC. He is survived by brothers, Gerald Vance, deceased, Roy Vance of Washington, IN and James Vance and his wife Mary Ann of Loogootee, IN.
Private services will be held at Sugarland Memorial Gardens in Washington, IN.
