Jane Stanley Mead, age 92, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Meadowood Health Pavilion in Bloomington. She was born March 20, 1918 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to John and Sophie (Tworoger) Stanley. When she was a child, her family divided their time between Tilton, N.H. and the Bermuda Islands, where her father and grandfather managed The Princess Hotel. She graduated from Low-Heywood School in Stamford, Conn and Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, Mass. Jane worked as a secretary at the Airborne Instruments Laboratory on Long Island, N.Y. where she met her future husband, Judson Mead. They were married on May 12, 1944 and enjoyed 66 years together before Judson died Oct. 10. A Bloomington resident since 1949, Jane was active in many community groups in cluding The Bloomington Garden Club, Sorosis, Tri-Kappa, PEO and the University Women’s Club. A breast cancer survivor herself, Jane was a volunteer for many years with Reach to Recovery, helping women recover from breast cancer surgery. Jane and Judson were strong supporters of Indiana University and were instrumental in establishing the Robert Shrock Professorship in the university’s Department of Geological Sciences. Jane was a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church where she served on the vestry, was a member of the alter guild, taught Sunday school and participated in many service projects.
In addition to her husband, Judson, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Dean Stanley. She is survived by three sons; Judson of Buffalo, N.Y., Thomas (Lenore) of Orinda, California and John (Virginia) of Carbondale, Illinois and five grandchildren; Suzanne, Thomas, Andrew, Christopher and Carolyn.
A service for Jane will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 17 at Trinity Episcopal Church; 111 S. Grant St; Bloomington.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reach to Recovery c/o the Bloomington Hospital Foundation.
Day Funeral Home in Bloomington is in charge of arrangements.
