On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, James “Jim” Perry Ogle, 88, of Bloomington, IN received his wings. He passed away, surrounded by loved ones, in the house that he built 36 years ago. Jim was the 4th child born to Boston P. Ogle and Beatrice J. Ogle (Smith) on July 19th, 1934. He spent his childhood in Bloomington, IN with his 7 siblings. Written in birth order: Wilma Meadows (Ogle), Herald Ogle, William “Billy” Ogle, Betty Ogle, James “Jim” Ogle, Mary Wilbur (Ogle), David Ogle, Johnny Ogle.
On June 26, 1952 at 18 years of age Jim married the love of his life, Evelyn Oliphant, 17. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard. After his time in the service he became an independent contractor; and eventually entrepreneur, becoming the creator, owner and CEO of Quality Garage Builders for over 35 years.
Jim came from humble beginnings. He stopped attending public school after the 8th grade but he never stopped learning, as is evident by the successful business he built from the ground up. His family is very proud of the legacy he has created. Jim is a great example of the American dream. Through hard work and determination he was able to build a business that allowed him to provide for his family and structure his days to his advantage. He was also able to provide jobs for family members as his business grew. It helped him build better relationships with his son, Jimmy, and grandson, Michael. He saw the value and rewards of hard work and did his best to pass that on to his family.
He was a salt-of-the-earth man full of determination and grit who thoroughly enjoyed teasing everyone he loved. Jim loved westerns, especially the John Wayne films. We think it’s safe to say that Jim embodied the American cowboy spirit as seen in those classic films. He enjoyed being active all the time; from square dancing, bowling, and playing horseshoes with his wife to riding his lawnmower, driving to the local Crescent Donut shop, and going to Bob Evans most mornings to tease the waitresses. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his loved ones. He will be dearly missed and always remembered.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and most recently his great grandson Tim “TimBo” Isom in April of 2023.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Ann Ogle, 87. They were married for over 70 years. Their 71st anniversary would’ve been June 26th of this year.
Jim is also survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They are as follows, listed in birth order. Children: Terry Ogle [wife Rena Ogle (Wever)], Cathy Ogle, Karen O’Bannon (Ogle), Rev. Jimmy Ogle [wife Judy Ogle (Roberts)]. Grandchildren: Michael Purtlebaugh, Brandi Evans, Tiffany Ogle, Ethan Ogle, Rev. Joshua Ogle [wife Ashley Ogle (Massey)] and Matthew Ogle. Great grandchildren: Darian Evans, Cody Purtlebaugh, Amellia Ogle, and Ruby Ogle. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Sue Ogle (wife of the late David Ogle.)
Jim requested a Celebration of Life be held in his honor instead of a traditional funeral service. We are having a private graveside ceremony on June 16 for immediate family members. We request that all of Jim’s family and friends join us in celebrating his wonderful life at his and Evelyn’s home on June 17 from 2-4 pm. Please reach out if you are planning to attend or if you would like to bring something to share. Lawn chairs are encouraged.
We are forever grateful to Bloomington Hospital, Dr. Talaga, the nurses, and all those that supported us during this time.
Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home will be making the final arrangements for Jim. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.DayDeremiahFrye.com on James Perry Ogle’s obituary page for the Ogle family.
