Glen Riley Steenberger, 55, of Nashville Indiana, passed away in his home on January 17, 2025. Known for his exemplary character, passionate career, and unbounded exuberance for life, Glen was a loving husband and father, a dedicated community leader, and a friend and advocate to anyone in need.
Born on April 26, 1969, in Indianapolis Indiana, Glen was the youngest son of Theodore Asa Steenberger and Anna Lois (Hill) Steenberger. After losing his father at a young age, and with older siblings having moved out on their own, Glen stepped into his first leadership role- assuming the responsibilities of managing a home alongside his mother, Anna.
Throughout his childhood and adolescence, Glen was an active member of Melody Skate Club, the local competitive roller-skating club, and competed in artistic roller-skating with excellence, eventually achieving a national title 1984. Through skating, he met a beautiful young woman, a figure skater from Chicago named Maria, who would later become his wife.
During this time, Glen was also a dedicated member of the Boy Scouts of America as part of Troop 95, based in the Crossroads of America Council in Indianapolis. He was known to his peers and Scout leaders alike as an outstanding Scout, achieving not only the rank of Eagle Scout, but also distinguished by membership in the Order of the Arrow with Vigil Honor, attaining Firecrafter’s highest rank, Minisino, and honorary membership of Micosay.
Glen graduated from John Marshall High School in Indianapolis in 1987. The first in his family to attend college, Glen pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Affairs and graduated from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 1993.
Following graduation, Glen’s belief in the mission and values of The Boy Scouts of America led him to his first position in the Crossroads of America Council, which would pave the way for a long and decorated career as a professional in the organization. Glen was known to all who worked with him for his tenacious work ethic, unwavering integrity, and tactful leadership. He embodied the principles of the Scout Oath and Law, and personified the traits of “physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight”. Glen spent his thirty-one-year career in a variety of roles within Scouting across the Midwest, but the excellence of his character and leadership remains nationally recognized.
Beyond his career, Glen was also appreciated as a model of character in his community. Always looking to serve others, he was a distinguished member of the local Rotary chapter and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Glen embodied these traits not only in his professional life, but in his personal life as well. In October 1995, he married the love of his life, Maria Sanchez-Steenberger, in Indianapolis. In December of 1996, they welcomed their daughter, Gabrielle, born on her mother’s birthday.
During the following years the family of three moved throughout the Midwest, each relocation expanding their circle of friends, and bringing them closer to their dream- to retire in Brown County, Indiana. In 2010, Glen accepted the position of Scout Executive of the Hoosier Trails Council, and the family moved first to Bloomington, and then to their dream home in hills of Brown County. Glen spent the next fifteen years tirelessly dedicating his time and energy to developing acres of property and a log cabin into a homestead for his family.
To his family, Glen was a resolute provider, a gentle caretaker, a fixer of broken things, a rescuer of animals, and a lover of the outdoors, but most importantly, a devoted and loving husband and father. To all who knew him, Glen was a thoughtful and generous friend, an animated storyteller, a passionate colleague with wisdom beyond his years, and a hard-working neighbor who would always go out of his way to offer a helping hand. He will be remembered by all as a model of strength, morality, integrity, and genuine kindness.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents and sister. He is survived by his wonderful wife Maria, his daughter Gabrielle, as well as extended family and a large circle of friends.
