Gary Lee Pitman, 76, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away Monday, March 17th 2025 at the I.U. Bloomington Hospice House. Born December 31, 1948 in Dunnville, Kentucky, he was the son of Leonard Lee and Bernice (Evans) Pitman. He enjoyed the outdoors, so seeing him hunting or fishing, spending time with his family and friends, or seeing him riding a motorcycle was nothing new for anyone who knew him.
Gary was a proud United States Army veteran where he served our country in Cu Chi, Vietnam during the Vietnam war, where he was in the 25th Infantry Division and was exposed to agent orange.
He was very active as he participated in many things. Gary was a member of the American Legion Post 18 as well as the American Legion Riders Chapter 18 and Sons of the American Legion Post 18. He was also a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 604 as well as a member of the Moose Lodge #1081.
Gary’s faith also meant a lot to him as he was a member of the Ellettsville House of Prayer and was a retired member of the Unchained Gang Ministries. He did jail ministry and was currently going to Owen County Jail and serving for Wheeler Mission at Camp Hunt.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Katrina (Jacobs) Long, whom he married on February 16, 2018 and treasured their seven years together. Gary is also survived by sons, Jeremy L. (Mary) Pitman of Guthrie, Indiana and Robert „Cory“ (Leah) Antolik of Vernon, Florida, his daughter, Carie Ann Pitman (John) Zaiser, of Greenwood, Indiana. Gary also leaves behind a sister, Kathy (John) Thomas, of Bloomington, Indiana as well as 10 Grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren, 1 niece, 3 great nieces and 1 great nephew. Gary is also survived by a special granddaughter, Adelynn Long, whom he had a very special relationship with as well as her parents, Katrina’s son and daughter-in-law, Steven Dale Long & Mindy Jean (Shute) Long.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Bonnie Jo Antolik, on February 13, 2015, as well as both of his parents and sadly, one grandson.
A funeral service will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home; 4150 E 3rd Street Bloomington, Indiana 47401. Friends may visit the family on Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery; 401 W. Church Lane; Bloomington, IN 47403.
