Elizabeth Jean “Betty” McDevitt, age 93, of Bloomington passed away on Monday at the I.U. Health; Bloomington Hospice House. Born September 12, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois; she was the daughter of Herman and Edna (Roche) Voss. She retired from Bloomington Hospital where she was a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit. Betty was a long-time parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and a member of the Bloomington R.N. Club.
Betty/Mom/Nana/Grandma will be remembered for her gentle spirit, quiet dignity and easy smile. Her favorite roles in life were of wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and caring nurse. Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by her 14 grandchildren, laughing, dancing and singing to a good Irish song. Betty was proud of her Southside Chicago Irish roots and to be the oldest sibling of eight. She was easy-going and game for anything, be it a drive to Lake Monroe or travel abroad. She never met a dog she didn’t pet or a baby she didn’t snuggle. Betty was a wonderful cook who welcomed everyone to her table. Her hardworking nature and her faith were guiding forces for her children and grandchildren. Her marriage was profoundly simple and strong and we are smiling in knowing she is reunited with her dear Dan. Mom/Nana took joy and wonder in everyone and everything she encountered. She loved us well and was loved immensely.
Betty is survived by three sons, Patrick (Dorothy) McDevitt, of Anchorage, Alaska, Kevin McDevitt, of Rochester Hills, Michigan and Dan (Paula) McDevitt, of Bloomington; two daughters, Jean (John) McCarthy, of Carmel, Indiana and Elizabeth (Sean) Major, of Hartland, Wisconsin; one brother, Joseph (Ginger) Voss, of Elmhurst, Illinois, one brother-in-law, Jack Walsh, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, two sister in-laws, Joanne McDevitt, of Ogden Dunes, Indiana and Beatrice McDevitt, of Hobart, Indiana; and her grandchildren, Daniel (Casey) McDevitt, Kate (Nick) Stayner, Briana (James) Wojciechowski, Cara McDevitt, Shannon McDevitt, Connor McDevitt, Megan McDevitt, Kelli McDevitt, Bridgette McCarthy, John McCarthy, Joseph McCarthy, Ben Major, Marie Major and Cazzy Major.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel B. McDevitt in 1984, her daughter in-law, Kathryn McDevitt, her parents and by six siblings, Mary (Eugene) Sullivan, Donald (Mary) Voss, Shirley (Thomas) Maloney, Geraldine (Denis) McCarthy, Virginia Walsh and Veronica (Joseph) Connolly.
