Betty Jane McGee, 79
Betty J. McGee, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother died on June 22, 2016 in Bloomington at the age of 79.
Betty Jane Evans was born on July 28, 1936 in Washington, IN to James Curtis Evans, Sr. and Pearl Evelyn (Shelton) Evans. She graduated from Washington High School in 1954 and was a member of the Melody Maids, Latin Club, and Beta Club. She married the love of her life, 2nd Lt. Louis Michael McGee, Jr. of Washington on April 11, 1955 at St. Simon’s Catholic Church. After marriage, the happy couple travelled to Europe where Louis served in the U.S. Army.
After returning from Europe in 1957, Betty worked at Indiana Bell Telephone Co. in Indianapolis as a Switchboard Operator. The couple moved to Bloomington in 1960. Betty began working at General Electric Co. in 1968 after having four children. During her 25-year career at GE, Betty held a number of positions in the plant and administration before retiring as Benefits Coordinator in 1993. While at GE, Betty continued her education at Indiana University, was a President of the Bloomington Jaycees, and was a member of the American Business Women’s Association. She was also a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 61 years and four children, Teresa “Terri” Taylor and husband, Barry; Cindy Bowling and husband, Jim; Michael McGee and wife, Alison; Bradley McGee and wife, Anna. Betty will also be fondly remembered by her eight grandchildren, Sabrina, Casandra, Leighla, Kristy, Rachel, Ryan, Katherine, and Gavin, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Betty is survived by her sister, Janice Strange, and her brother, James Evans, Jr. Betty was preceded in death by her mother and father.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 26 from 4-8 p.m. at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, 700 W. Gourley, Pike in Bloomington. On Monday, June 27, visitation will be held at 9 a.m., followed by funeral services at 10 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 4607 W. State Rd 46 in Bloomington. A reception will be held at the church following interment at Valhalla Memorial Gardens in Bloomington.
