Obituary of Ariel May Green
Ariel May Green, age 102, passed away in Bell Trace on October 6, 2014. She was born on a farm near Ireland, Indiana on June 14, 1912 to Ottis and Maye Rose Green. Ariel lived a full, active life until she was 101 years old when her health began to fail. Education was an important part of her life. She began at the Adams School, a one room school house in Dubois County. She was graduated from Ireland High School in 1929 and went on to Oakland City College. After one year there, she moved with her family to Bloomington where she attended Indiana University earning two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts. Ariel spent forty two years teaching grades 7-12 in public schools. Of these, thirty one were spent in Bloomington nearly all at her beloved Bloomington South High School. Ariel was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Clan Rose, the WCTU, the Borrowed Time Club, I.U. Women, ISTA, Historical Society and Council of Social Studies. At the church she was active in the Mary Kirby Guild, Women’s Association, Scholarship for the Posoltega College Student Program and other church sponsored activities, such as volunteering at Opportunity House. She also volunteered to help other organizations around the city, i.e. bell ringing for the Salvation Army and working at the Monroe County Historical Society. Her volunteering gained her many awards. Until she was 101, Ariel participated in the Bloomington Senior Olympics and won many medals. In 2009, she authored and published one book, One Way to Travel Life’s Road. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother: Lloyd Green of Indianapolis and one sister: Mary Massey of Franklin, IN. She is survived by great-nieces, great nephews, several cousins and man, many friends including her former students. A celebration of Ariel’s life will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon in Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E. Third St., Bloomington, IN 47401. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, PO Box 1412, Bloomington, IN 47402. Inurnment at a later date in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Ireland, Indiana.
