He was born June 10, 1921 in Normal, IL son of Aaron and Hattie Higgs Green. He married Alma Fetterhoff in 1942. He later married Alice Haase Morgan on January 29, 1987.
Surviving are his wife of Bloomington; two daughters, Sharon Leipold of McLean and Karla (Richard) Schultz of Chenoa and one step-son, Michael (Brenda) Morgan of Gridley. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Gregory (Sheila) Leipold of Bloomington, Kimberly Leipold of Minneapolis, MN and Amanda Schultz of London, England; three step-grandchildren, Harley, Knute and Kolby Morgan, all of Gridley and three great-grandchildren, Alison, Clayton and Whitney Leipold, all of Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and one son-in-law.
John was a United States Army Veteran, inducted in 1942 and honorably discharged in 1945.
He retired from Harjak Motors in Bloomington, where he worked in the parts department. After retirement, he enjoyed working part-time for 14 years as a Unit 5 crossing guard at Oakdale Elementary School.
John was a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW Post and Eagles Lodge, all of Bloomington. He enjoyed woodworking with his wife, dancing, listening to country music and eating sweets. He will be missed by all of his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington, where visitation will be one hour prior to services. Entombment will be at East Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Bloomington.
