Holmes was born July 13, 1925, in Shirley, the son of Holmes and Mabel Kidwell Carter Sr. He married Betty Hoch on August 28, 1954. She survives.
Also surviving are their children, Mark (Karen Kistner) Carter; Lisa (Randy) Wylde; and Julie (Tom) Shackley, all of Bloomington; eight grandchildren, Nate (Melissa) Carter; Tanner (Ashley) Carter; Sam, Ben, and Luke Wylde; Kevin, Jack and Maggie Shackley; two great-grandchildren, Jake and Sophie Carter. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
Holmes served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for many years. He joyfully attended countless sporting events of his grandchildren. He was their biggest fan! He was an avid golfer, Cubs, and Bears fan.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
