Helen Chambers, 90, of Bloomington passed away Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 5:25 a.m. at the Richard L. Owens Hospice House in Peoria. She was born January 10, 1927 in Bloomington, the daughter of Logan and Eva Coy Hall. She married Louis Gulyash in 1946, who preceded her death. She later married Gerald Chambers, who also preceded her in death.
Helen lived her entire life in Bloomington, retiring from Eureka Williams and continued to work other temporary jobs into her late 70’s. She loved her short stint as a member of the “Sweet Adelines” singing group. She attended Vale Community Church and will be remembered for her welcoming smile. She was a master at Hollywood trivia, remembering names of authors and actors from movies and television shows going back decades. She loved animals and would tear up at the thought of one being abused or mistreated. In April 2013, Helen miraculously survived a house fire that nearly took her life. In fact, she was placed in hospice care but with divine intervention was given a clean bill of health a couple months later. After moving to Lincoln Towers, Helen delivered Peace Meals to residents daily up to the week of her death.
She is survived by six children, Celestia Boughner of Elmhurst; Diana (Chris)Kupish of Blue Mound; Clifford (Leigha) Gulyash of Cerro Gordo; Eva Gulyash of Bloomington; Eric Gulyash of Bloomington; and Teri Watkins of El Paso. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren: John, Vanessa, Julie, Marci, Dane, Ryan, Amber, Michael, Jeremiah, Amariah, Josiah, Jael, Azriel, Laishah, Logan, Lucas, Liam, and Amelia and 19 great grandchildren: Alexander, Ally, Kassie, Sage, Logan, Violet, Ivan, Chance, Zayne, Jaylen, Jenna, Cameron, Josslyn, Jalen, Junia, Josie, Javin, Jonah, and Emma; a brother, Dick; and three sisters: Marge, Louise, and Shirley.
She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Louis Gulyash, her parents, several brothers and sisters, and two grandchildren, Christina and Sean.
Because of her soft spot for animals, Helen would appreciate memorials to the McLean County Animal Shelter or in lieu of flowers, to Vale Community Church.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 9th at 3 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Private burial will take place at a later date.
