Her funeral will be will be Monday, Feb. 27, at East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington. Burial will follow the ceremony at East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
She was born Dec. 6, 1950, in Torreon, Mexico. She married Arturo Cornejo June 16, 1968, in Mexico City. He died May 27, 2020.
She is survived by her children, Patty (Jim) Stahly of Bloomington, Luis (Angelica) Cornejo of Normal, Fernando (Jennifer) Cornejo of Bloomington, and Freddie (Amy) Cornejo of Normal; her grandchildren, Noe, Jared, Carmen, Lauren, Kate, Peyton, Kinley, Cambrie and Maddox Cornejo; and Stella Stahly. She is also survived by brothers Roberto, Ramiro and Fernando, and sisters Martha and Cecelia.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Francisco.
Carmela came to the United States in 1970. She worked for Funk’s (later Ciba) Seeds. She owned and operated Country Lace Bridal Shop.
She was passionate about her family, gardening, cooking and sewing. She enjoyed hosting events and spending time with her grandchildren. She was also active in the community, participating in the Baby Fold’s Festival of Trees and the Relay for Life for many years, as well as Heartland Head Start.
She will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 27, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington. Inurnment will take place at East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington.
