Zelia Maynard Baugh, age 73 of Hoover, AL, passed away after a long and courageous battle with congestive heart failure. She was born October 20, 1938 in Birmingham, AL to the late John R. Maynard, Sr. and Zelia Garth Maynard. She was preceded in death by her brother, John R. Maynard, Jr.
Zelia was a graduate of Shades Valley High School and attended UAB School of Nursing. She was a draftsman at Rust Engineering before assisting her husband, Aubrey Thomas Baugh, Jr. M.D. in establishing his Allergy practice in 1965. Zelia had multiple duties, which included being a receptionist, accounting, scheduling and coding.
Shortly afterward, she became a mother and devoted her life to her husband and family. She was a doting grandmother, who the grandchildren affectionately called GaGa.
Zelia was also a woman of many interests and talents including: being a small business owner, crafting, Commissioner of Softball at Hoover Parks and Recreation, traveling, church activities, cards and games, Alabama football, weekends at Lake Martin, and any activity involving family. She also loved to play pranks and practical jokes on the unsuspecting. She was known for her sense of humor and compassion for others.
Zelia loved to do special things and make dreams come true for others, especially family. She was a fighter and never backed down from a challenge, and it was this spirit that allowed her to overcome many medical problems. She never let them get her down or stop her from doing things she loved.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Aubrey Thomas Baugh, Jr. M.D. of Hoover, AL; daughter, Zelia Garth Baugh of Vestavia Hills, AL; son, Aubrey Thomas Baugh, III and his wife Margaret of Eufaula, AL; grandchildren, Thomas Hayden Baugh, James Hunter Baugh, Elizabeth Anne Baugh; sister, Elizabeth Lynn Doles of North Carolina; special family friend, Heather Youngkin; niece, Holly Cimino (Victor); nephews, Iverson Warner Doles IV, John Riley Maynard, III (Beth), Ephraim Garth Maynard (Cathy); sister-in-law, Jimmie Maynard; cousins, Ethel Garth Scott, William Starnes and family dog, Woody.
The family would like to give special thanks to these angels on earth who did a wonderful job with her care: Darryl Gulley, Nora Gulley, Claudia Jemison, Cristy Daffron, Jennifer Williams, and Affinity Hospice.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday December 23, 2011 between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Bluff Park United Methodist Church. The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. at Bluff Park United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to Zelia’s church, Bluff Park United Methodist Church.
