William "Earle" Riley, a beloved physician, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024. Born on February 16, 1937, to Edith and Ted Riley, both of whom predeceased him, Earle dedicated his life to the service of others through medicine and community involvement.
Earle is survived by his three loving children: David Riley, Elizabeth Riley Ellett (John), and William Riley. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom he cherished deeply.
A practicing physician for over 50 years in Birmingham, AL, Earle was known not only for his clinical expertise but also for his significant contributions to the medical community. He was actively involved in the Alabama Medical Association (AMA), where he served as chairman for several years, demonstrating his commitment to the advancement of medical practice and policy.
Earle was also dedicated to the education and training of future doctors, serving as a mentor and teacher. His contributions extended to Samford University, where he was the school doctor and the men's basketball team doctor for several years. Earle also served his country as a captain in the Air Force, where he practiced as a doctor.
A service to celebrate Earle's life will be held at 11:00 AM on July 17, 2024, at Elmwood, in the mausoleum chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House in his name, honoring his lifelong dedication to caring for others.
Earle Riley will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his profession, his love for his family, and his service to his community and country. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
