Bill spent most of his early years in Pratt City. He attended and graduated from Ensley High School in 1947. He played saxophone in the band there and lettered in baseball. After graduating, he attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University).
On November 25, 1954, Bill married the love of his life, Katherine Jane Loring. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage until her passing in 2017. Shortly after their marriage, Bill served in the U. S. Army. His service was from December 1954 until November 1956. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
He returned to school and graduated from the Birmingham School of Law in 1967. Bill spent the majority of his career in insurance risk management and retired from Brunos, Inc in 1995.
Bill was a humble man who loved his family deeply. He did everything that he could to make sure that they had a better life, and this also extended to his friends. He enjoyed fishing, Auburn sports, listening to radio talk shows in his later years, and spending time with his sons and grandchildren.
Bill was a member of the Methodist Church for many years and was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in McCalla.
In thinking about our dad, the scripture that embodies him most is 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Bill finished well.
Bill is survived by his sons, Loring Muir and Mike Muir; grandchildren, Amanda Muir and Abby Muir, Brandon Muir and Brent Muir; and great grandchildren, Shaylynn Muir and Melissa Muir.
A visitation will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023 from 1pm until 2pm at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home. A celebration of Bill’s life will follow at 2pm in the Celebration Chapel at Elmwood. Bill will be laid to rest next to his wife, Jane in Birmingham’s historic Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bill's memory to Lifeline Children’s Services or Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.
