William James (Jimmy) Gibbs aged 89 passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2017. Jimmy was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Auburn University in 1952 and worked as a chemical engineer for US Steel for over 50 years. He was a Deacon at First Baptist Church of Birmingham. He was preceded by his wife Carolyn Newman Gibbs and his brother Jackson Howard Gibbs of St. Louis, Missouri. He is survived by his sister Mary Glenn Calhoun of Maitland Florida, his nieces Beth Calhoun Alford, Kay Calhoun Gonzales, Jane Calhoun Claus and Julie Gibbs; his nephews Jackson Howard (Jay) Gibbs II and Joe Gibbs; his first cousin Thomas J. Gibbs; his beloved dog Trixie. Visitation will be at 10:00 am followed by the service at 11:00 am at Johns-Ridout’s Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave. S.W., Birmingham, AL 35211. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Birmingham in Homewood.
