William T. (Bill) Clark, age 92, passed away peacefully at home on February 6, 2019. Mr. Clark was born on May 25, 1926 to Virgil O. and Stella Rowe Clark and grew up in Falkville, Alabama. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Clark received a BS from Jacksonville State Teachers College, an MA from Peabody College, and an AA from the University of Alabama.
His lifelong love of sports included playing football and baseball at Falkville High School and Jacksonville State. He began his career in education as a teacher and athletics coach at Bessemer High School. His leadership abilities and skill in developing educational programs enabled his career to develop, eventually becoming the Superintendent of the Bessemer City Schools. In 1970 he became the founding Superintendent of the Vestavia Hills City School System, where he served until his retirement in 1979. He served as an Elder at Independent Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Kiwanis Club for many years. Bill loved hunting, fishing, sports and spending time with his family.
Mr. Clark is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ann Armbrester Clark; son, Ted Clark; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Steve Barry; grandchildren Genna Dietrich (Andrew), Scott Barry (Jessie), Lynn Bowers (Brinck), and Brett Barry (Lauren); and nine (soon to be ten) great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Glenda Williams Clark; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clark was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank and Lewis Clark, and sisters, Ruth Thompson and Nell Clark.
After a private burial, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:30 AM at Independent Presbyterian Church with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation http://vestaviafoundation.org/giving/ or the charity of your choice.
