William served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S Army from 1953 to 1955, demonstrating commendable leadership and dedication. His academic journey saw him graduating from West End High School and later earning a degree from The University of Alabama. Professionally, William was a Certified Public Accountant and a revered Professor at Miles College, where he influenced many lives with his knowledge and wisdom.
Beyond his professional life, William was a Deacon at North Shelby Baptist Church, deeply involved in his faith and community. He was known for his loving and Christian spirit as a husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His hobbies included sports, reading, and sharing his great sense of humor, which brought joy to those around him.
He leaves behind a loving family: sons William Rush Blankenship, Jr. (Debbie) and Brian Blankenship (Patsy); daughter Karen Landrum; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members. William was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Sadie Bailey Blankenship; his wife, MaryAnn Blankenship; and his sisters, Jane Padgett, Dorothy Blankenship, and Ethel Campbell.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, from 10AM-11AM, followed by the funeral service at 11AM at Ridouts Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave SW, Birmingham, AL 35211. William's life and legacy will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
